A nanorobot has no motor of its own. An outside magnetic field moves it, so getting it to a target, like a spot in the brain, means controlling that field.

A path-following controller for a magnetic drug-delivery nanorobot. Controlled magnetic fields steer the robot along a planned route to its target.
A nanorobot has no motor of its own. An outside magnetic field moves it, so getting it to a target, like a spot in the brain, means controlling that field.
The controller compares the robot's position with the planned path and points the field to pull it back onto the path while moving it forward. A rotating field spins the helical robot so it swims like a corkscrew.
The controller improved how closely the robot tracked its planned path, alongside the lab's work on magnetic actuation and 3D-printed nanorobot prototypes.
